Lassi can be called an 'antique shake.' Lassi is the name given to an Indian beverage made from yogurt to refresh during hot summers.
It originates from the lands of Punjab and Multan in India. Yogurt is mixed with water and various additives such as fruits, spices, jaggery, or sweeteners. The main variants of Lassi are sweet or savory.
However, many new flavors have been introduced to this drink to give a surprising twist to the traditional yogurt-based beverage. It is a great refreshment that can be enjoyed at breakfast or mealtime.
Lassi can be considered an 'old shake' and, in fact, the world's first yogurt shake. The concept originated around 1000 BC and initially included fine fruits or pure spices.
It is known for its Ayurvedic healing properties and for its calming effect on the stomach and mind.
However, there is another way to obtain it. When cream is churned butter, the leftover liquid is called buttermilk, which is also a kind of Lassi. It is commonly known as "Chaati ki Lassi".
Buttermilk is a different variant of yogurt and is also called "Chaas" or "Chaach". It is famous in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
It is formed after removing the fat from butter and has a thinner consistency than yogurt-based Lassi.
Typically, toasted jeera (white cumin), salt, and black pepper are added to make it more appealing to the palate.
